The story of Danjuma Favour Dan, our Stipendium Hungaricum Excellence Award recipient is one of determination, faith, and meaningful growth. From the unforgettable ceremony at the Festetics Palace to finding both academic and personal inspiration at the University of Szeged, her journey reflects the strength and resilience that define successful international students.

What does receiving the Stipendium Hungaricum Student Excellence Award mean to you?
This award is a deeply meaningful milestone. For me, it is a testament to my faith and the belief that with God, all things are possible. It symbolizes the value of hard work and resilience, and it affirms the dedication I've poured into my journey as an international student. More than just recognition, it is a motivation to continue growing not only as a future nurse but as someone committed to contributing to global health and inspiring others from my community.

How did you experience the official award ceremony at the Festetics Palace?
The ceremony at the Festetics Palace was unforgettable. The historic and beautiful setting made the occasion feel profoundly special. It was a moment of reflection that made me appreciate how far I’ve come, and I felt a genuine sense of pride. I was deeply honored to stand among so many who value excellence and education. The entire experience was both a celebration and a source of renewed motivation for the future.

What motivated you to pursue your higher education studies in Hungary?
My ambition to study abroad always felt like a distant dream, but it became a tangible goal thanks to my dad, who first sparked my interest in Hungary. As I began my own research, I was drawn to its rich history, but it was the country's profound scientific legacy that truly captured my imagination. I remember feeling amazed and inspired when I discovered that Nobel laureates like Albert Szent-Györgyi and Katalin Karikó were both connected to the University of Szeged. At that moment, everything clicked. It wasn't just about finding a country with a good university, it was about finding a place where scientific excellence felt alive and accessible. That discovery made Hungary feel like the clear choice, a place where I could truly belong and grow.

How do you feel about the faculty and your study program?
I feel genuinely supported and inspired by the faculty and my study program. Studying nursing at the University of Szeged has given me strong theoretical knowledge as well as practical, hands-on experience. The lecturers are dedicated, the environment is encouraging, and the multicultural setting has helped me grow personally and professionally. Also, the admission officers in the international office have been guiding me through each process from day one. I truly feel that I’m being shaped into a competent and compassionate healthcare professional.

What do you consider the biggest challenge of being an international student in Hungary?
The most significant challenge is undoubtedly the language barrier. While our studies are in English, navigating daily life outside the university requires Hungarian. It can be difficult to express yourself fully and connect deeply with the local culture. However, the language courses provided by the scholarship are an invaluable opportunity. It's a challenging but rewarding process, and each small step in learning brings more confidence

What professional or personal goals have you set for yourself for the near future?
Professionally, my immediate goal is to begin my clinical practice as a registered nurse, focusing on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. I am deeply passionate about health promotion and plan to pursue advanced degrees, with the long-term aim of earning a doctorate. Through this, I hope to gain the expertise needed to develop community and global health initiatives, address health disparities, and make a meaningful impact both locally and internationally. Personally, my goal is to cultivate the resilience, compassion, and leadership necessary to be not just a healthcare provider, but a true patient advocate and a source of strength for the communities I serve.

What advice would you give to future Stipendium Hungaricum applicants or other international students?
My advice is simple: be brave and take the leap. This journey will challenge you in ways you can’t imagine, but it will also shape and strengthen you beyond measure. I like to summarize my guidance with a personal mnemonic I created, “PREBIDA”:
Pray: Ground your journey in faith. It provides strength and peace amidst uncertainty.
Resilient: Life will test you. See each challenge as a chance to grow stronger.
Embrace: Welcome new experiences and challenges; they are your greatest teachers.
Bold: Step into opportunities with confidence. Ask questions, take initiative, and own your space.
Inspire: Let your journey motivate others. Your progress has a ripple effect.
Develop: Be intentional about learning—both inside and outside the classroom.
Adventure: Say "yes" to new friendships, cultures, and paths. Sometimes the best destinations are found on unplanned detours.

Always remember: every setback is a setup for a powerful comeback.
